Continuing our quick chats with inventors and creators, we grab five minutes with the master of image stabilisation, Eric Wei from Feiyutech.
Hello, who are you?
Hiya, I’m Eric Wei,
the founder of FeiyuTech.
And what do you do?
I used to be an
engineer and worked on researching automatic control systems. Then I
set up FeiyuTech, which is focused on video stabilisation technology
research. At first we produced unmanned aerial vehicle control
systems (drones), then turned to action camera stabilisers, smart
phone stabilisers, and camera stabilisers.
Tell us how you got
started in that.
In the early days, we
researched inertial angular measurement technology, and we launched
drones and automatic balance control system for model aeroplanes.
There is a huge gap in the market for image stabilisation - consumer
and professional. So we decided to combine the drone and
stabilisation technologies and launch aerial gimbals. Now we a
concentrating on that.
What is an average day
like for you?
I love to clear my head
and exercise in the morning to get ready for the day. I spend at
least 1/3 of time in R&D of products, and the rest of my time
concentrating on feedback from customers and communicating with them.
I love to spend time with my family as they are my motivation.
Where do you see your
industry going in the near future, and how might you have to adapt?
We know that the need
of video stabilisation is very apparent, but the functions of gimbals
will change rapidly. They need to be easier to use and lighter in
weight and easier to carry. We keep a close eye on what our customers
think of the products so that we can adapt our strategies to their
needs and act quickly upon changing temperatures in the market. But
our key goal is to innovate: we are consistently looking out for new
trends and making them happen before others.
What advice would you
offer to someone keen to follow in your footsteps?
We have to be
pragmatic. Love your dream and don’t be afraid of failure. Maintain
progress by learning from your mistakes.
Apart from your own
products, what kind of gadget would you like to see being interviewed
on The Test Pit?
I would like to see
more robotics and next generation technology that solves everyday
issues that consumers face.
We'll certainly try.
Thanks Eric!
