REVIEW: Edifier R20BT Desktop Speakers

We’ve reviewed loads of Edifier speakers over the years, covering everything from compact desktop setups to more substantial systems designed for filling a room with sound. One thing we’ve come to appreciate about the brand is its ability to deliver decent audio without charging a fortune, and the Edifier R20BT desktop speakers are another example of that approach. These are relatively affordable speakers designed for everyday listening at a desk, whether we’re working, watching videos, listening to music or simply wanting better sound than our computer’s built-in speakers can manage.

First impressions are pretty positive. The R20BT speakers have a straightforward design that should fit comfortably into most desktop setups without taking up an unreasonable amount of space. They’re not trying to be flashy or pretend to be something they’re not, which we quite like. Sometimes, we just want a pair of speakers that look presentable, are easy to set up and get on with the job, and these certainly fit that description. Build quality is perfectly respectable for the price, although anyone expecting premium materials or a particularly luxurious finish will need to spend considerably more.

Where these speakers really impress us is their sound output. Given their relatively low cost, we think the R20BT delivers a pleasing listening experience that makes them a worthwhile upgrade for anyone still relying on basic laptop or monitor speakers. There’s enough volume for desktop listening and casual use around a smaller room, while the overall presentation is enjoyable for a variety of content. Music sounds fuller and more engaging than we’d expect from something at this price point, and there’s enough clarity to make spoken-word content, videos and podcasts easy to listen to.

Naturally, we need to keep our expectations realistic. These aren’t expensive studio monitors, and they won’t provide the detail, separation or bass performance of a much pricier speaker system. If we’re listening critically to complex music or looking for deep, room-filling bass, there are better options available. However, that rather misses the point. For everyday use, the R20BT offers a pleasing balance of sound quality and affordability, and we suspect most people shopping in this price bracket will be more than happy with what they hear.

Connectivity is another useful aspect of the package. Bluetooth support means we can stream audio wirelessly from compatible devices, which is handy when we want to play music from a phone or tablet without having to mess around with cables. That flexibility makes the speakers useful beyond simply being connected to a desktop PC. We always appreciate having a little extra versatility, particularly when it comes at a budget-friendly price.

Of course, these speakers aren't going to satisfy everyone. Those who need extensive connectivity options, advanced audio controls or serious bass reproduction should investigate more expensive alternatives. Equally, anyone with a particularly demanding desktop audio setup might find it worth investing a little more. But for general computer use, casual music listening and streaming, the R20BT makes a convincing case for itself.

Overall, we’re impressed with what Edifier has achieved here. Having reviewed plenty of the company’s speakers in the past, we’ve come to expect good value, and the R20BT largely delivers on that promise. The sound output is enjoyable, Bluetooth adds welcome convenience, and the low asking price makes them accessible to anyone looking for an affordable audio upgrade. They’re not going to compete with high-end speaker systems, but they don’t need to. If we wanted a reasonably priced pair of desktop speakers that sound good without making a huge dent in our budget, the Edifier R20BT would certainly be worth considering.
