REVIEW: LOWA Renegade Evo GTX Mid

The LOWA Renegade Evo GTX Mid is one of those boots that has earned a solid reputation among day hikers and light backpackers, and after spending time in them we can see why. At first glance they strike a familiar balance between robust construction and a clean, understated design. The mid-height cut gives a reassuring sense of ankle support without the bulk of a heavyweight boot, and the Gore-Tex lining promises dry feet when conditions turn wet. For many of us who value versatility, the Renegade Evo sits comfortably in the sweet spot between casual walking shoes and full-on mountaineering boots.

Comfort is one of the strong suits here. Right out of the box the insole and midsole combine to offer a cushioned ride that absorbs trail shock well — especially on uneven forest paths and gravel tracks. We noticed the fit to be relatively true to size for most foot shapes, with enough room in the toe box to avoid numbness on longer days. That said, anyone with particularly wide feet or very high insteps may want to try them on first, because the Profile is more of a standard fit rather than an ultra-wide cut. The break-in period is reasonable: there’s some stiffness initially around the ankle and heel, but it relaxes after a few hikes and stops short of causing blisters for most users.

Traction and stability are where these boots really do their job. The outsole provides confident grip on damp rock and muddier trails, and the midsole frame keeps the foot stable when we cross rooty or uneven terrain. The mid-height cuff gives added protection against ankle rolls, which is useful when carrying heavier daypacks or when the trail gets technical. If you’re tackling very steep scree or carrying expedition loads, you might prefer a stiffer, higher-cut boot — but for day trips, multi-day hikes with light loads, and general outdoor use, the Renegade Evo’s support is more than adequate.

Waterproofing thanks to the Gore-Tex membrane works well in moderate wet conditions. We kept our feet dry during rainy-day walks and when splashing through shallow streams. The breathability is good but not exceptional; on long, hot summer marches feet can still get warm. For those who hike primarily in hot climates, a non-Gore-Tex, more breathable model might be a better match. Conversely, if you need guaranteed dryness in colder, wetter environments the Gore-Tex is a welcome feature that performs consistently.

Durability feels solid. The combination of leather and synthetic materials creates a boot that stands up to abrasion from brush and rock, and the stitching and construction seem designed to last multiple seasons of regular use. That said, like any leather-constructed footwear, ongoing care — cleaning, conditioning, and occasional resoling if you use them heavily — will extend their life significantly. We didn’t see any early signs of sole delamination or upper separation, which is encouraging, but long-term wear will ultimately reveal the true lifespan.

On the downside, the Renegade Evo is not the lightest option in its class. Walkers who prize minimal pack weight will notice it. The price point also sits toward the higher end of mid-market hiking boots; while we think the materials and build justify that cost for many buyers, cost-conscious consumers could find similar comfort and performance from less expensive alternatives. Finally, style is subjective — the Renegade Evo opts for a conservative, utilitarian look rather than something flashier.

In summary, the LOWA Renegade Evo GTX Mid is a dependable, comfortable boot aimed at hikers who want a versatile, weather-resistant option that performs well across a variety of trails. We appreciate its strong traction, sensible support, and durable construction, while noting that weight, breathability in hot weather, and a somewhat premium price are the trade-offs. For day hikers and weekend backpackers who prioritize comfort and reliable waterproofing, it’s a very solid choice. If you’re seeking ultra-light footwear or maximum ankle stiffness for heavy loads, you might want to look elsewhere, but for everyday trail use the Renegade Evo earns its place on our short list.
