NEWS: Learning a new language? Don't bother

The Babel Fish is real!

If you've ever struggled to understand and be understood while in a another country, you might have reached for your phone and the many language translation apps currently available. That might soon become completely unnecessary (stopping you looking like an uncultured foreign oaf) if the Pilot Earphones get off the ground.

These earphones basically translate, in real time, foreign languages directly into your ear. Linked to a mobile app on your phone, they listen to the speaker, translate the speech from a downloaded dictionary on your phone (so no need for a data connection), then relate the translation audibly. Yep, just like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's Babel Fish. But less painful. Or weird.

Set for release next year, the Pilot Earphones from Waverley Labs (which will also play music, BTW) will first seek funding via Indiegogo. To find out more about pledging your support, visit http://www.waverlylabs.com/
