Elon Musk, AKA The Saviour of Mankind, has just announced
that SolarCity, the solar power company he recently bought, will begin
production of modular roofing units with built-in solar panels. That means that
instead of affixing large and cumbersome Solar PV panels to your roof, the roof
itself will be able to generate electricity from the sun.
All this is still yet to be confirmed, as the merger of
SolarCity and Tesla has yet to complete, but SolarCity’s Peter Rive says that a
roofing solution such as that could be ready for market by this time next year.
It will tie nicely in with Musk’s plan to convert each and every home into its
own power station.
As Musk said recently about his ‘master plan’, he wants to
see… “A smoothly integrated and beautiful solar-roof-with-battery product that
just works, empowering the individual as their own utility, and then scale that
throughout the world.” Seriously, this guy is awesome.
