REVIEW: PNY USB Power Pack

CHARGE!!!

Here at The Test Pit we are not simply dedicated to a life of gadgetry and gizmos - some of us also have a social life. And so this week one of our illustrious team members had to attend a wedding; get to our age and that seems to happen every other week.

And so he set off into deepest darkest Wales of all places, fearing that a long drive and a whole day spent away from an electrical socket would leave his only tie to civilisation - his smartphone - flatter than his enthusiasm to be there. Fortunately help was literally at hand thanks to the PNY USB Power Pack.

REVIEW: Q-Bopz Bluetooth Speaker

Stick around.

Suction cups; a staple of childhood if you grew up in the 80s and 90s. Just about every toy we remember playing with had them, from suction cup darts and arrows (that required a healthy dollop of spit) to wall climbing spiders and that baddy from He-Man with the suction cup mouth. To be honest, we miss the dirty ring marks the suction cups would leave everywhere, as modern gadgets tend to do without them.

So we were especially pleased to be sent something that still uses them and, thank the Gods of Gadgetry, does so in an inventive way. That's the Q-Bopz Bluetooth Speaker from QDOS.

REVIEW: Nerf Rapidstrike CS-18

Strike now while the flywheel's hot.

War is ablaze on the quaint little streets of England. Divisions are drawn between neighbours, friends and even family. Nobody goes untouched by war's savage fingers and chaos is rife in what was once a peaceful land.

The combatants are both young and old, male and female, and as battle rages the only sounds are those of yelps of pain and calls of "Anyone got any AA batteries?" That is because at last the Nerf Rapidstrike CS-18 blaster has landed; rapid strike by name, rapid strike by nature. We got hands on.

REVIEW: Yale Keyless Digital Lock

One staple of science fiction films and books are doors that don't require a key. You never saw Captain Kirk desperately search for the keys to the Enterprise, did you? Nor did ever hear of a Jedi dropping his house key as he pulled out his lightsaber.

That's because keys, those little pieces of easily lost antiquited metal, have no place in the world of tomorrow. They're on their way out, and Yale is showing them the literal door.

FEATURE: Get off our case!

We test out some of the latest smartphone cases and covers in which to wrap up and protect your pride and joy.

We cant speak for you (we could try but we would fail) but we at The Test Pit are a right old group of clumsy bastards. After a quick hands-up poll we discovered that all of us have at some point completely ruined a mobile phone through abject butter-fingerness. Its our job to carry, hold and fiddle with phones and tech and yet we still drop things more times than a drunk baby would.

That is why we are firm exponents of the mobile phone case; that handy and usually vital accessory that adds a layer of personalised style and much needed protection to our talkie-boxes. To that end, we decided to group a solid bunch of products together and test the living day-craps out of them. Here are the best of the best.

REVIEW: Jabra Revo Wireless Headphones

Ain't no jibber Jabra.

We're writing this review on a laptop running off a battery while connected via wifi to the internet. We receive a call on our mobile phone and answer it using a bluetooth headset. Earlier we were taking our remote control helicopter for a spin after watching a few shows on the smart TV. We live in a world without wires.

Ain't nobody got time for wires. Although we must apologise for the use of bad grammar, we feel it aptly demonstrates our hatred of those binding cables; those wearisome wires. We loathe them most of all when there is need to get out and about, to consume our beloved media tipples while on the move. Thankfully there is Jabra who, it seems, hates wires just as much as we do.

FEATURE: The Manper Session

The manly pamper.

Ladies, believe it or not but we men don't want to spend all our time fiddling with gadgets, plugging in tech or playing with toys. No, sometimes we need a little "me" time to recharge our batteries (the ones in our bodies, not our smartphones), wash the muck off our faces and generally preen and pamper.

But - and that is a very significant but - we men aren't going to book ourselves into a spa or pop down the beauty salon like you girls might. Oh no, we'll get manpered at home thanks to all the wonderful male cosmetic gadgets out there. Here are a few we really like.

REVIEW: Zinc Red-I Micro Camcorder

Red and/or dead.

You're a crazy bunch, aren't you? If you're not skateboarding to a funeral you're parasailing into the office. You mad lot, with your extreme sports and your YouTube channels. Anything dangerous that you do, from popping ollies outside the YMCA to not washing thoroughly after stroking a cow, gets uploaded to YouTube - and its all captured on your trusty smartphones.

But what about the stunts that are just a tad too dangerous; those where you really don't want to risk your flashy phone (whereas risking your life is fine)? How do you record those extreme moments? Easy... get yourself a Zinc Red-I Micro Camcorder.

REVIEW: Mega Construction Kit Pro Workshop

A saw subject.

We love to build things at The Test Pit, and when we review toys we like to get something we can really sink our teeth into. Even now, the thought of tearing open a new LEGO set is making us salivate.

However, the problem with a lot of 'build-it' toys is that the pieces are just laying there waiting for you to stick them all together. What about our manly need to cut and saw, to drill and screw (ahem) - how are these needs satisfied? Well, with the Mega Construction Kit Pro Workshop from John Adams Toys, we think we've found a way.
